The Basics

What is Medicare Extra Help?

Extra Help is a Medicare program designed to help people with limited income and resources pay some of their Medicare prescription drug costs. Depending on your eligibility, Extra Help may help reduce your Part D prescription drug plan premium, deductible, copayments, and other covered prescription drug costs. People who qualify for Extra Help also generally do not have to pay a Part D late enrollment penalty.

If you qualify for Extra Help and do not already have Medicare prescription drug coverage, Medicare may automatically enroll you in a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan so you can begin receiving the cost savings available through the program. If Medicare enrolls you in a plan, you will receive information about that plan, and you generally have the option to choose a different Medicare drug plan that better fits your needs.

Comparing Coverage

Why Your Plan Choice Matters

Being eligible for Extra Help does not mean that every Medicare drug plan will be the same. Plans can differ in their covered medications, pharmacy networks, copayments, formularies, and other coverage rules. Reviewing your available options can help you find coverage that works with the medications you take and the pharmacies you prefer.

Depending on your individual circumstances, you may also have the option to receive prescription drug coverage through a Medicare Advantage Plan with prescription drug coverage (MA-PD) rather than through a stand-alone Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (PDP). Medicare Advantage plans may combine Part A, Part B, and prescription drug coverage in one plan and may offer additional benefits, depending on the specific plan.

Understanding Your Choices

Get Help Comparing Your Options

Medicare coverage can be confusing, particularly when Extra Help, Part D, and Medicare Advantage plans are involved. A licensed insurance agent can help you review available plans, compare benefits and costs, and understand how your prescription medications may be covered.

Eligibility for Extra Help is determined by Medicare and/or Social Security based on applicable requirements. Plan availability, premiums, benefits, covered drugs, pharmacy networks, and cost-sharing vary by plan and service area.
